Safe Migration Program

India is home to 200 million migrant workers, forced to leave their homes due to a lack of livelihood opportunities. They endure poor working conditions, long hours, inadequate water and sanitation, and lack of safety equipment. Many are daily wagers relying on unstable incomes with no social security.
Million internal migrants, this vulnerable population remains largely overlooked. While various government welfare schemes exist, they fail to reach most migrants due to bureaucratic barriers and lack of awareness. Frequent movement between states further jeopardizes their food security, job stability, and access to legal rights.

Objective

Our objective is to empower and support India's migrant workers by addressing the challenges they face due to economic migration, poor working conditions, and lack of social security.

Ensure Food Security – Provide nutritious meals and essential supplies to prevent hunger and malnutrition.
Improve Healthcare Access – Facilitate medical support, hygiene awareness, and healthcare services for migrant workers and their families.
Enhance Livelihood Opportunities – Promote skill development, vocational training, and sustainable employment options.
Bridge the Gap in Government Welfare – Advocate for better access to government schemes and ensure workers receive the benefits they are entitled to.
Address Documentation Challenges – Assist migrants in obtaining essential identification documents such as Aadhaar, Ration, and Job Cards.
Promote Legal and Social Rights – Strengthen awareness and advocacy for fair wages, safe working conditions, and labor rights.

In 2022, we started Safe Migration, a community-led effort to help migrant workers and their families stay safe and secure while moving for work. This project brings together nonprofits, businesses, and supporters to protect vulnerable workers across India.

Over the next two years, Safe Migration will work to improve the lives of 1 million workers and their families in 10 districts across 3 states. Our goal is to ensure that migrant workers have better job opportunities, safer working conditions, and access to government support, focus on providing quality education for their children, so they can have a brighter future.
